2011 Big “I” Days Included Golf, Bocce Ball, and a Live Auction
MONTEREY, Calif. (June 23, 2011) – Capital Insurance Group (CIG), the leading regional property and casualty insurer serving the Western U.S., and local agent Dylan Sacco, with the George Petersen Insurance Agency, Inc. in Eureka, California, together raised money for the “Schools of Hope Program.” Sacco acted as the Master of Ceremonies and auctioneer for the two-day (June 1 and 2) events. CIG donated two golf trips, one as a prize for the raffle and another as an item to be auctioned off. Proceeds from the fundraisers totaled $814 and support the United Way “Schools of Hope Program” in Humboldt County. The program pairs adult volunteers with young children to help improve reading proficiency.
United Way is leading a coordinated effort to close the reading achievement gap throughout California’s North Coast by partnering with the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County, the school districts, offices of education, school administration and staff, parents, non-profit organizations, literacy experts, businesses, and individual donors. The United Way of the Wine Country web site states, “When kids can’t read, they can’t succeed. Research shows that a student who is not at least moderately successful in reading by the end of third grade is unlikely to graduate high school.”
Sponsored by the Humboldt County chapter of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of America, Humboldt Big “I” Days are held each year in June. This year, the events included a gathering at the Ingomar Club in Eureka, golf and bocce ball tournaments at Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata, a live auction and raffle, and a luncheon and awards banquet. Representatives from almost every insurance company writing business in Humboldt County, as well as employees and owners of all of the region’s independent insurance agencies, traveled from Mendocino, the Bay Area, Sacramento, Truckee, Monterey, and elsewhere to take part.
“Giving to a local charity like the United Way’s Schools of Hope Program gives CIG the opportunity to help our local kids in first through third grade develop their reading skills and prepare them for better academic performance,” said Tom Cox, CIG North Coast Branch Manager. “Nine hundred third-graders in Humboldt County are reading below grade level, so we are pleased that our contribution directly benefits kids in our community.”
Raffle tickets were drawn throughout the evening. The trips donated by CIG to the fundraising effort included one to the Stevinson Ranch Golf Club in Merced County in conjunction with the NCGA/NCPGA Junior Tour Tournament of Champions in October and another for two rounds of golf at Pebble Beach’s Poppy Hills Golf Course along with dinner and accommodations on the Monterey Peninsula.
Don Becker, a partner in the Becker Insurance Agency of Ferndale, which has represented CIG since 1967, bid on and won the Stevinson Ranch trip as part of the live auction. His high bid won him hotel accommodations, dinner, and a round of golf for two, as well as attendance at the NCGA/NCPGA Junior Tour Tournament of Champions on October 29 and 30 at Stevinson Ranch and a tee sponsorship at that event. The raffle prize donated by CIG for golf at Pebble Beach’s Poppy Hills Golf Course, dinner, and accommodations was won by Rachel Adams, an agent in the Santa Rosa office of the George Petersen Insurance Agency, Inc.

Our programs rely heavily on community support and donations, and the children in our ‘Help a Child Read’ program reap so much through the funding provided by the generous attendees and donors of this event.”
