MONTEREY, CA (September 30, 2011) – The Northern California PGA Foundation announced the winners of its Jim Langley Scholarship — Annie Bowlsby of Santa Catalina High School in Monterey and Anthony DelDotto of Armijo High School in Fairfield. The Langley Scholarship Fund selects award recipients based on academic achievement, professional employment, community service, character, and golf playing ability.
The Langley Scholarship derives its funds from the NCPGA Foundation’s high profile annual fundraiser “The Langley – A Tribute to Legends”, sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, (CIG). This is the third consecutive year that CIG, the leading western regional property and casualty insurer, has been the title sponsor and their fourth year as an event sponsor.
Bowlsby has started her freshman year at the University of Delaware, and plans to apply her scholarship toward her pursuit of a Business degree. She will also participate as a student athlete on the Women’s Golf Team “I would love to have a profession that has something to do with the golf industry, but I am really trying to keep my options open and seize every opportunity I am presented with,” said Bowlsby.
DelDotto started his freshman year at New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, NM because it is one of the best schools in the country to pursue a Business degree in Marketing with an emphasis in PGA Golf Management. “My plan is to work and teach golf at a prestigious golf course,” said DelDotto.
The Jim Langley Scholarship Fund
Through the NCPGA Scholarship Program, the Jim Langley Scholarship Fund is able to support and encourage continuing education by assisting students residing within the bounds of the NCPGA Section with post-secondary schooling. Graduating high school seniors are provided with a means to achieve their dreams and promote the fundamental values that this great game has to offer. Scholarships of $2,000 each are awarded to one male and one female student.
This year’s “The Langley – A Tribute to Legends” took place August 29-30 at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, CA. The fundraising event honored golf legends Johnny Miller, PGA TOUR Player, and R.J. Harper, senior vice president of Pebble Beach Company. Over 100 golfers and 235 dinner guest enjoyed two days of golf, fine food and participated in raising funds for The Langley Foundation.
“The awarding of scholarships to talented young students like Annie and Anthony makes CIG’s involvement with NCPGA and The Langley so worthwhile and gratifying”, said Peter Cazzolla, President and CEO of Capital Insurance Group.
Annie Bowlsby is an outstanding student, leader and athlete. With a 4.13 GPA in her senior year, Bowlsby understands the need to balance academics, competitive sports and volunteering – a skill set she will use at the University of Delaware. As a four-year varsity team golfer, she qualified for the coveted First Team All-League honors all throughout high school. As team captain, her high school golf experience was capped off by a second place finish at the Central Coast Sectional Championships. She has competed in many tournaments ranging from local AT&T events to state-wide and national events including Junior Golf Association of Northern California, NCGA, FCWT, and AJGA. Her community and leadership positions included being a junior mentor and coach for The First Tee, raising $5,000 to create an Elementary School Golf League in Salinas, CA for the Alisal School District. The goal was to be a competitive, team-building, life skills enhancing program, helping to limit the growing gang problem in Salinas by giving kids an enjoyable after-school activity. She has also participated in the Life Skills Academy, a golfing and leadership academy at Kansas State University, as well as held numerous leadership positions including Vice President for the National Charity League, a mother-daughter charity organization. Through her involvement, she has completed approximately 450 hours of service to the Monterey Peninsula Quilters Guild, Dorothy’s Place, SPCA, Project Linus, Salvation Army, and Nancy’s Project.
Despite a demanding academic schedule at Armijo High School, DelDotto was a member of his school’s Leadership Committee all four years and as a senior was captain on the Varsity Golf Team, with an 18-hole average of 79. He is one of the top golfers in the area and made the All-League team, he then proceeded through the Section tournament, and competed in the Masters tournament. Through his Leadership Committee work, he has dedicated many hours toward community service. With a strong work ethic and much dedication, he was known by his high school coach to be the first at golf practice and the last to leave. DelDotto was a regular at the local facility, Rancho Solano Golf Course, for many years, first as a junior member and later as a high school student. According to Assistant Golf Professional Colin Van Vessem, “His scholastic attributes and leadership skills, on and off the course, will help excel in his future endeavors.”
