CIG Sponsored Championship Crowns Players-of-the-Year

MONTEREY, Calif. (November 4, 2011) – The NCGA and NCPGA’s Junior Tour of Northern California Championship, sponsored by Capital Insurance Group (CIG), took place at Stevinson Ranch, in Stevinson California, on October 29th and 30th, 2011. The final championship tournament invited players with the most points earned throughout the sixteen-tournament series that encompassed the Spring, Summer, and Fall 2011 season. On top of awarding the tournament winners, the 36-hole stroke-play competition crowned the Boys and Girls Player-of-the-Year honors.

To become the player-of-the-year for an entire season, takes consistency and stellar play at the largest of events. In addition to winning two Junior Tour tournaments, Bryson Dechambeau of Clovis, CA did just that by qualifying and playing well at the US Amateur, Callaway Junior World, and the NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship. In the Junior Tour series, he never finished outside the top 10. His top-notch performances set him above his competitors and helped him earn the honor of 2011 Boys Player-of-the-Year.

Earning the Girls Player-of-the-Year was Casie Cathrea of Livermore, CA. While competing in seven Junior Series tournaments, Casie won an astonishing four tournaments, including the Tour Championship. In fact, in her other three starts, she finished second twice and tied for seventh. If that wasn’t enough, she competed on the biggest stage at the US Girls Junior.

“The 2011 Junior Tour of Northern California was an exciting season that showcased a talented pool of junior golfers from a wide array of Northern California cities,” said Peter Cazzolla, President and CEO of Capital Insurance Group. “The skill and dedication to golf displayed by these young athletes make the efforts of CIG, the NCPGA Foundation, and Junior Tour of Northern California very worthwhile.”

In the Tour Championship, Justin Pagila of Dublin capitalized on his first-round lead to claim the top spot in the Boys Championship Flight. His rounds of 69-73 for a two-day total of 142 proved to be just enough to beat out second-place finisher William Brueckner of Walnut Creek, who carded a consistent 72-72-144. Elk Grove’s Andrej Bevins and Clovis’ Trevor Clayton tied for third place at 4-over-par and a two-day total of 148.

In the Girls Championship Flight, last year’s champion, Casie Cathrea of Livermore, shot outstanding rounds of 69-74 for a one-under total of 143 to win the championship and seal her honors as the Player-of-the-Year. Jessica Luo earned second place with a score of 77-78 for a two-day total of 155. Marissa Hinchman of Lodi took third with back-to-back 80’s for a tournament total of 160.

At the end of regulation, there was a first-place tie between Josephine Chang of San Ramon and Kiran Sangha of San Mateo at 172. After comparing score cards, it was Josephine who captured the title, while Kiran took second place. Lillian Torres of Fresno finished in third with rounds of 86-87-173.
